The first mineral wool on record was produced in Wales in 1840. Large scale production of glass fiber on a commercial basis dates from 1932, primarily for insulation. The Owens-Corning Fiberglas® Corporation was formed in 1938 and began mass production of continuous filament fibers. Continuous glass fiber can be produced by a simple crucible furnace, an electric melting pochet furnace, or today by a direct melt furnace. The capacity ranges from 100 to 60,000 metric tons annually. There are several types of glass fiber with different raw material ingredients. The worldwide annual production capacity is currently around 3 million tons. The diagram below illustrates the most common methods of manufacturing continuous glass fiber.
